Reassessing HOW DO YOU SLEEP in 2019

John Lennon alternately referred to the song as “nasty,” “not that serious” and his response to “withdrawing from Paul and the Beatles and the relationship with Paul.” One would be hard-pressed to find a Beatles/Lennon song that has caused more long-term professional and emotional damage than 1971’s How Do You Sleep.
Lennon certainly dishes out the jibes in this rancorous diatribe, but can the song withstand some lampooning in return? In this episode, AKOM takes a harsh look at HDYS. At times analytic, at times sympathetic and at times adopting the same mocking tone as the song itself.

In theory, this a great and welcome series. In practice, for me, it’s unlistenable. This is due to the tone of the narrator’s voice, specifically her tendency to end almost every sentence with a deeper, croaking sound. Millions of Americans seem to affect this tone and it seems to be spreading around the Anglophone world. Speech experts may be able to explain it. I cannot. Sorry but it’s extremely irritating, I feel like I’m listening to bored teenagers sitting in a Starbucks in LA. Good luck.

This episode contains more hate than How Do You Sleep. It does to John what it accuses John of doing to Paul. Would have preferred more analytical dialogue to more hate.
