Yes, Steptoe and Son was huge at the time, and teenagers would have watched and understood the 'very clean old man' gag, not just older people. I believe there was later an American version called Sandford and Son, though I've never seen it. The Can't Buy Me Love scene was heavily influenced by Lester's Running, Jumping, Standing Still film with the Goons crowd, which the Beatles loved and so was one of the primary reasons he got the gig. I'll check out the American doc'.
